History

BASC was founded in August 1886.

Edinburgh's "The Lorne Club" chartered a steamer and sailed across from Trinity. Their 150 members put on a demonstration of competitive swimming, diving and life-saving in the harbour at the West Breakwater.

This event was so well received that a local club was formed and within a week BASC held their first competition with J Hardie winning the Captaincy of the Club.

The Club's full title is: Burntisland Amateur Swimming Club and Humane Society. The 'Humane Society' reflecting the great interest in life-saving.

The Club has seen many changes since that time and now enjoys the luxury of an indoor pool. It is still a competitive club with a strong teaching element and warm welcoming social atmosphere.

Swim Program

Swimmers are led by qualified teachers, coaches, poolside assistants and a pool co-ordinator.

Children are assessed by ability (rather than age) and move up lanes when both their swimming times and stroke techniques improve.

The first session generally has the younger swimmers. Swimmers progress through to second session as their stroke and strength progresses. First and second sessions have three swim times a week; not all swimmers can commit to all sessions but we recommend they attend two sessions a week to see the best improvement

After successfully mastering all strokes and taken part in a number of competitions, children are invited to move to the Squads.

The District & Development Squads have longer and more options of swimming as well as land-training when available.
